Imagine IT – Phase 4
It really is amazing how things just fall in to place sometimes. As I am reading Stuck In the Shallow End, the major argument presented in the book is that minority students do not have adequate access to computer science or computer education. This is a very real situation. I know that at my school, there is no class that deals with computer programming or anything of that nature. Computers seem to be meshed in with things like journalism, pretty much exactly what the book argues – that any computer class is basic function, i.e., word processing. Ironically enough, the book goes on to state while there may be computers available, there may not be staff that is trained or even comfortable with using them and I was one of those people. My colleague and I share an IPad cart and I was not very inclined to use them last year. As part of the problem solving process, this program through Wipro and MSU presented itself and I consider myself fortunate to have been accepted for the technology training. Things such as Quick Fire Challenges, World of Wonder, etc., will help my students model their understandings. I can’t solve the inadequacies in CPS but I am trying to make my little corner in it a tad bit better.
